A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Spring is in the air and I am happy to see the sun and great daytime temps that allow us all to enjoy our “best friends” outdoors. This is my favorite time of year as the desert environment comes to life with all it’s colorful blossoms. Take advantage of opportunities to schedule events that include FiFi or Fido..

March 13th was Sun City’s 50th anniversary parade and I’d like to thank all of the club members who volunteered their time and effort to make the event successful!  And successful it was as we received the 2nd place ribbon for Division 10!  Great planning, decorating and participation made for a wonderful reception by the crowd as the float passed by. Many holding up their own dogs and showing signs of approval with applause and waving flags. I’ll bet it’s been awhile since many of us have been in a parade that honors the community we live and play in!  A truly great experience for the Club members and “best friends”.

On March 16th I was ask to attend the Sun City Fire Department monthly meeting to accept a plaque recognizing the efforts our Club makes in the Sun City. I accepted the award, but make no mistake, it belongs to all of our members who have made a difference in a dogs life. Many who have adopted dogs from a shelter, some even rescued from the streets, were taken in and given a home and shown compassion.

I’d like to also pay tribute to our Sun City Fire Department who has been an inspiration to our Club to get involved with pet related concerns within our senior based community. While on scene of an emergency, if there is a pet, they will do whatever they can to secure proper care for the animal. That’s why the Club’s Pet Vial of Life is so important since it contains valuable information on who to contact for the pet if the owner is unable to care for it.

 The plaque acknowledges;
“Thanks, presented to the Best Friends Dog Club of Sun City in recognition of your time, devotion and love given to the care and treatments of our animals.”

Best Friends Dog Club has provided these Vials at no charge for several years in the community. It was our first community effort to help first responders handle pet situations during emergencies. The Club has a dedicated committee to furnish and deliver these Vials to locations throughout Sun City. This committee has been very active and is chaired by Ada Jane Cowper. Contact her at 623-933-1197 if you would like to participate.

The Vial of Life is also at the center of a community action group formed last year P.E.T.S. (Pets Emergency Temporary Solutions).

Several community partners are involved as we attempt to establish short term foster care parents (72 hours max) to address emergencies in the area. If you are interested in becoming a volunteers please contact Jan or Lou Sniderman at 623-933-7907 or myself at 623-261-5502.  If owners do not make arrangements for their pets before an emergency arises, Maricopa County Animal Care is the only option. Please make sure your beloved pets have a loving place to go if you are unable to care for them.

Best Friends is thrilled to have a new home and arena at Fairway on the southeast corner of the building.  March 27th was the Fun and Frolic days at Fairway. We participated in the arena with obedience classes, and agility and drill team demonstrations. If you would like to join the drill team, contact Pat Estok for more information at 623-583-0891. All Fairway clubs participated.

April 9th was the Bark in the Park picnic at Rio Vista and April 20th was a pizza party in the Arizona Room to celebrate summer break.

“Making a difference one dog and one volunteer at a time.”

Have a happy and safe summer.  Hope to see you all at the next club meeting on October 19th.
